लगता नहीं है दिल मिरा उजड़े दयार में

लगता नहीं है दिल मिरा उजड़े दयार में
किस की बनी है आलम-ए-ना-पाएदार में
My heart finds no peace in this desolate land; who has ever found fulfillment in this transient world?

इन हसरतों से कह दो कहीं और जा बसें
इतनी जगह कहाँ है दिल-ए-दाग़-दार में
Bid these yearning desires go dwell somewhere else; where is there room to spare in this scarred, wounded heart?
Tell these unfulfilled desires to go and dwell somewhere else, for there is hardly any space left in this wounded and scarred heart.

काँटों को मत निकाल चमन से ओ बाग़बाँ
ये भी गुलों के साथ पले हैं बहार में
Do not cast out the thorns from the garden, O gardener; beside the roses, they too were nurtured in the spring.
O gardener, do not cast out the thorns from the garden, for they too have grown up alongside the flowers during spring.

बुलबुल को बाग़बाँ से न सय्याद से गिला
क़िस्मत में क़ैद लिक्खी थी फ़स्ल-ए-बहार में
The nightingale holds no grievance against the gardener or the hunter's art; captivity in the season of spring was written in its fate from the start.
The nightingale has no complaint against the gardener or the hunter, for being imprisoned during the spring season was written in its destiny.

कितना है बद-नसीब 'ज़फ़र' दफ़्न के लिए
दो गज़ ज़मीन भी न मिली कू-ए-यार में
How ill-fated is Zafar! For his final rest, he could not obtain even two yards of earth in the street of his beloved.
Zafar is so unfortunate that he could not even get two yards of ground in the lane of his beloved for his burial.
