Ghazal

Bahadur Shah Zafar· Ghazal· 7 shers· radif:

This ghazal captures the lover's deep sense of helplessness, despair, and total devotion. It expresses how conventional physicians and earthly remedies are futile for the heart's affliction, which can only be cured by the beloved.

What have they not done, and what is it they do not do? / Yet by God, they act such that it seems they do nothing at all.
What is it that they have not done, and what do they not do even now? Yet by God, they do things in such a way that it appears as though they do nothing at all.

The healer for this malady of grief is someone else; I take no remedy from any other physician.
The physician for this illness of my sorrow is someone else, which is why I do not take medicine from any other doctors.

I do not understand what kind of veil or reserve they maintain against me, when they show no modesty or hesitation toward others at all.
4
Though the rancorous cleanse their outward guise, they accomplish nothing if they purify not the heart.
Even if spiteful people keep their outward appearance clean, it amounts to nothing if they do not purify their hearts.
5
She still extends some tenderness, soothing me in part, / Yet your laments produce no real effect, O heart!
The beloved still comforts me to some extent, but O my heart, your cries and laments produce no effect at all.
6
I gave you my heart in the hope of fidelity; you keep no faith with me, yet it matters not at all.
I gave you my heart in the hope of loyalty. If you are not faithful to me, it matters not at all.
7
In such a subtle manner, O Zafar, they torment the heart / Outwardly it seems as though they inflict no pain at all.
O Zafar, the beloved torments the heart in such a way that, outwardly, it seems as if they are inflicting no cruelty at all.
