Ghazal
Jab Ki Pahlu Men Hamare But-e-khud-kam Na Ho
This ghazal expresses the profound agony of separation and ceaseless weeping in the absence of a proud, self-willed beloved. Tormented by heartbreak, the poet laments their lost peace and vents their anguish through a bitter reproach, wishing unrest upon the one who robbed them of their solace.

1
When by my side that self-willed idol does not stay, / Why should weeping not be my business, night and day?
When that willful beloved is not by my side, why would my only business day and night not be to weep?
2
The one who stole away the peace of this heart, O Lord, / May that so-called 'heart’s-ease' never find any peace at all!
O Lord, the one who took away the peace of my heart, may that heart's comforter never find any rest or peace at all.
3
What you took for betel-stained lips rubbed with dark missi, / O pupils of the eye, beware—lest dusk has begun to bloom!
What you took to be lips stained with betel leaf and darkened with missi—O pupils of the eyes, look closely, lest dusk has begun to spread.
4
Today that wine-drinker has graced the garden with his presence; why then should a goblet not rest upon the palm of the narcissus?
Today that wine-drinker has graced the garden with his presence, so it is only natural that a goblet is resting upon the palm of the narcissus flower.
5
Slay me now in a solitary place where none may be, lest, my dearest love, you earn disgrace before the world.
Kill me now at a place where there is no one around, so that, my beloved, you do not become disgraced among the people.
6
Untie with care the tangled knots of your twisting hair, lest the bird of my heart be caught beneath the snare.
Untie the knot of your curly tresses carefully, lest the bird of my heart be trapped underneath its snare.
7
Without you, O willful idol, this heart is seized with dread: alas, lest your lover's life be utterly undone.
O willful beloved, without you my heart is gripped by fear that your lover's life might completely come to an end.
8
If all around, my friends, everyone lies listless and struck down, / Could it be that she has drawn the sharp sword of her arched brow?
Friends, everyone seems completely exhausted and struck down today; could it be that the beloved has drawn the sharp sword of their eyebrow?
9
So wondrously grown and enchanting are my playful love's infidel eyes, that even the almond-eyed narcissus dares not claim to be their peer.
My playful beloved's captivating eyes are so grand and fully grown that even the almond-shaped narcissus flower cannot equal them.
10
The dawn refuses to break, nor does the night pass away; could it be she has unveiled her pitch-black tresses across her radiant face?
Morning does not arrive and the night refuses to pass; I wonder if she has spread her jet-black hair over her face.
11
O Zafar, seeing the sun thus tremble in the sky above, / Could it be that on the rooftop's edge shines my radiant love?
O Zafar, the way the sun is trembling in the sky, could it be that today the beloved has appeared at the edge of the roof?
