Bahadur Shah Zafar· Ghazal· 9 shers· radif:

This ghazal expresses the profound helplessness and solitude of a lover burdened with unspoken yearnings and distress. Unable to find a sympathetic listener, and constrained by the beloved's hidden malice and mistrust, the poet finds no one with whom to share their heart's true pain.

The longing that fills my heart, to whom should I confess? / Who ever listens to affliction, to whom should I confess?
To whom should I express the longing that fills my heart? No one listens to anyone's suffering here, so to whom should I tell my distress?
2
Were you sincere, I too would speak to you with open candor; but rancor fills your heart—to whom, then, should I speak?
If your heart were clear and sincere, I too would speak openly with you; but when your own heart holds malice, whom should I tell?

I gave away my heart myself, and now myself repent; in truth, to whom can I confess a shame entirely my own?

Whomever I tell is seized with dread the moment they hear; to whom then should I recount this tale of my wild despair?
Whoever I speak to is instantly struck with dread upon hearing it; to whom then should I recount this tale of my wild despair?
6
You alone have been my comforter, O sorrow-laden heart; to whom else but you could I recount the pain of parting?
O sorrowful heart, you alone have been my comforter; to whom else besides you can I express the pain of separation?
7
Were you a friend, I would speak to you of friendship's grace; but you harbor enmity toward me—to whom then should I plead my case?
If you were a friend, I would talk to you about friendship, but you bear enmity toward me; to whom else then should I speak?
8
I lack the strength to speak my plight, what state could I unfold? / Nor has she leisure left to hear, to whom should it be told?
I lack the strength to express my condition, and even if I could, what would I say; nor does the beloved have the leisure to listen, so to whom else should I speak?
9

In truth, I find no one who truly understands; O Zafar, to whom then should I confess the reality of my plight?
In reality, I do not see anyone who understands so deeply; O Zafar, to whom then should I tell the truth of my condition?
