Ghazal

Akbar Allahabadi· Ghazal· 10 shers· radif:

This poignant ghazal laments the relentless passage of time and the profound transformation of the poet's world. Through motifs of vanished beauty, fading loyalties, and lost companionship, it evokes deep nostalgia and sorrow over the fading of the past and even of one's former self.

Gone is that breeze, gone is that garden, gone is that lane and those fair ones of old; gone is that sky, gone is that era, gone are those dwellings and the dwellers they hold.
Neither that breeze nor that garden remained, neither that street nor those beautiful people remained; neither that sky nor that atmosphere remained, neither those houses nor their dwellers remained.

No longer does the roses' fragrance dwell within the rose, nor does that tenderness remain in those we hold dear; The hue of faithful love has faded from the fair—why speak of others, when we ourselves are no longer who we were?
Flowers no longer possess their natural fragrance, loved ones have lost their gentle warmth, and the beautiful lack faithfulness; what to say of others, even we ourselves are no longer the same.

Neither that pride nor passion remains, nor the strife between piety and wine; no longer do eyes turn toward the holy shrine, nor bows the brow at love's threshold.
Neither that pride nor enthusiasm remains, nor that struggle between intoxication and ascetic piety; our eyes no longer turn toward the Qibla, nor are there impressions of the forehead left at the beloved's threshold.

Neither those wine-cups remain, nor those enraptured souls of the past, nor those faithful to the primordial covenant of 'Alast'; that ancient way of worldly affairs has ceased to be, nor do those noble pursuits survive that gave faith its vibrant majesty.
Neither those wine-cups nor those enraptured souls remain, nor do the devotees faithful to the primordial covenant survive; neither does that worldly way of living endure, nor do those pursuits that once gave glory to faith remain.

Though the world tempts us ten thousand ways, or the turning heavens display ever-new hues / It is impossible for the faithful to ever lose grief for their people, or devotion to their faith.
No matter how much the world tempts us or fate displays ever-changing hues, it is impossible for the loyal to ever lose their concern for the community and devotion to their faith.

My heart wanders the street of your tresses, which I now know as calamity's snare; What strange cruelty, what curious torment—if it abides not here, it exists nowhere.
My heart is caught in the street of your tresses, which I now recognize as a snare of calamity. It is a strange cruelty that if it does not remain here, it can exist nowhere else.

This assembly of joy breathes only through you; do not leave just yet, spare us this cruel blow! What pleasure could anyone linger to find, when the radiant light of the gathering is gone?
This joyous gathering is lively only because of you, so do not leave just yet and cause such heartbreak. How can anyone enjoy staying here when you, the very charm of the gathering, are no longer present?

Those gatherings, once the very light of heaven's eye, for which the sun and moon sacrificed their splendor, have now been erased so utterly that not a trace of them remains.
Those gatherings that were once the delight of the sky's eye and upon which the sun and moon were sacrificed have now vanished so completely that not even a trace of them remains.

Only those faces linger before the sight that toss the world in disarray, yet those world-adorning beauties, the very splendor of the earth, have passed away.
Only those faces now remain before the eyes that throw the world into turmoil, whereas those world-adorning beauties who were the very charm of the earth are no more.

If Akbar is besieged by sorrow and grief, know that even sorrow must meet its end; Nothing in this world possesses permanence, so let him not remain so deeply grieved.
If Akbar is surrounded by grief and sorrow, he should realize that sorrow too must come to an end. Nothing in this world is permanent, so he should not remain excessively sad and distressed.
