Yashoda, When Will My Braid Grow?

Surdas· Pad· 3 shers

In this verse, child Krishna innocently complains to his mother Yashoda about why his braid has not grown long and thick like Balarama's, despite him drinking milk regularly. It beautifully depicts the endearing charm of Krishna's childhood and the tender, affectionate bond between mother and son.

You promised it would grow like Balarama's braid, both long and thick; yet through every combing, plaiting, washing, and drying, it never falls to writhe like a serpent on the ground.
You used to say that my braid would grow long and thick like Balarama's, and that while being combed, braided, and washed, it would reach down and trail on the ground like a serpent.
