Shyam Asks: Who Are You, Fair Maiden?
This poem captures the charming and playful first encounter between Krishna and Radha in Braj. Krishna inquisitively asks for Radha's identity, to which she wittily replies while playfully teasing him about his reputation as the butter thief.

Inquires dark Shyam, 'Who are you, fair maiden? Where do you reside, whose daughter are you? Never before have I seen you in the lanes of Braj.'
Krishna asks, 'Who are you, fair maiden? Where do you live, whose daughter are you, and why have I never seen you anywhere in the streets of Braj?'

Why would we come toward Braj when we keep playing at our own doorstep? We only keep hearing with our ears that Nanda's son goes around stealing butter and curd.

"What could I have stolen of yours? Come, let us pair up and play!" Surdas says: The Lord, the crest-jewel of charmers, thus beguiled the innocent Radha with his sweet words.
Krishna says, 'What could I possibly steal of yours? Come, let us pair up and play.' Surdas says that the Lord, the crest-jewel among lovers, thus charmed innocent Radha with his sweet words.
