From that, the heartless one grew colder still, more cruel—
now even my fiery sighs have left my heart grown cold.
From that fire, the heartless one became even more cruel and unfeeling; now even my burning sighs have only made his heart colder.

The greedy one too bore a blister within his breast,
yet hearing just the lancet's name, his face turned pale.
Even the greedy one had a blister in his breast, but on merely hearing the name of the lancet, his face turned pale.

A hundred times he died, your lover who gambled away his life;
Yet to die once more he stood again, facing the six-sided dice.
Your lover, who gambled away his life dying a hundred times, once more stood ready to die before the six-sided dice.

Majnun too roamed the wilderness, like a whirling column of dust;
but when I kicked up the dust myself, he dissolved into dust and was lost.
Majnun too wandered the wilderness like a whirling column of dust; but when I raised the dust, he too turned to dust and was lost.

This arrow-stricken prey you would not deign to slay—
at last, writhing and writhing, cold it grew right here.
You did not slaughter this prey wounded by the arrow; in the end, writhing and writhing, it grew cold (died) right here.
6
There, that face with blossoming grew into a crimson rose;
Here, my sallow face with grief became a yellow rose.
There, the beloved's face blossomed with joy into a crimson rose; here, my pale face, worn by grief, turned into a yellow rose.

With the old Magian priest there is such wine, O Zauq,
that the coward turns man, the man a youthful lion grown.
O Zauq, the old Magian priest possesses such wine that by it the coward becomes a man and the man turns into a youthful lion.
