थे आगे बहुत जैसे कि ख़ुश यार हमें से
ऐसे ही तुम अब रहते हो बेज़ार हमें से
Once there were many who, like you, took joy in me;
And just like them, you now grow weary, aloof from me.
Just as many before were once pleased with me, so now you too have grown weary and estranged from me.

हैं सब से तो इस माह इशारात वलेकिन
रहती हो फिरी अबरू-ए-ख़मदार हमें से
Though to all the world this moon makes her gestures plain,
yet her arching eyebrow stays turned away from me alone.
This moon-like beloved gives her signs to everyone, yet her curved eyebrow remains turned away from me alone.

महफ़िल में जो देखा तो उधर तुम हो ख़फ़ा और
साक़ी को भी हो सोहबत-ओ-तकरार हमें से
When I looked through the gathering, there you stood, displeased with me;
and even the cup-bearer picks his quarrel and his talk with me.
When I looked around the gathering, there you were, displeased with me; and even the cup-bearer has his conversation and quarrel with me alone.

और दिन से जो कहते हो कि हम आज हैं नाख़ुश
उसको तो फ़क़त करना ही इज़हार हमें से
That more than other days you say we are displeased today—
it is but a confession we were bound to make to you.
When you say that we are more displeased today than on other days, this is merely something we were bound to confess to you.

गुलगश्त-ए-चमन करते हो जब हमराह-ए-यारान
वाँ भी ग़रज़ आती हो तुम्हें ख़ार हमें से
When you stroll through the garden in the company of friends,
even there, if need be, you reckon me a thorn in your path.

इक़रार-ए-मुलाक़ात हो हर इक से ब-सद मेहर
की ग़ौर तो होगा तुम्हें इंकार हमें से
You promise a tryst to every one with a hundredfold tenderness;
yet, if you reflect on it, denial is reserved for me alone.
You promise a meeting to everyone with a hundredfold affection; yet, if you consider it, refusal is reserved for me alone.

समझेगा जो रहते को नज़ीर अहल-ए-वफ़ा के
तो मिलने लगेगा वो तरहदार हमें से
When he learns, O Nazeer, the ways of living among the faithful,
Then that elegant beloved will come to meet with us.
When he learns, O Nazeer, the manner of living among the faithful, then that elegant beloved will begin to come and meet with us.
