kaha jo hanste hamein dar se kyon uthate ho

कहा जो हँसते हमें दर से क्यों उठाते हो
कहा कि इस लिए तुम याँ जो ग़ुल मचाते हो
I said, why laughing do you turn me away from your door?
You said, because it's here you raise so loud an uproar.
I asked why, with a laugh, you drive me away from your door; you replied that it is because I create such a loud uproar here.

कहा लड़ाते हो क्यों हमसे ग़ैर को हमदम
कहा कि तुम भी तो हमसे निगह लड़ाते हो
I said, why pit a rival against me, O my dear companion?
You said, but you too lock your gaze in combat with mine.
I said: O companion, why do you set a rival against me? You replied: but you too engage your glance in a duel with mine.

कहा जो हाल-ए-दिल अपना तो उस ने हँस हँस कर
कहा ग़लत हो ये बातें जो तुम बनाते हो
When I confessed to her the state of my own heart, she laughed and laughed
and said, 'All false—these tales are mere inventions that you spin.'
When I told her the condition of my heart, she laughed and laughed and said these are all false, mere tales you are making up.

कहा जताते हो क्यों हमको रोज़ नाज़-ओ-अदा
कहा कि तुम भी तो चाहत हमें जताते हो
I said: why do you flaunt your charms and graces to me each day?
You said: but you too show the love you bear for me, in your own way.
I said: why do you display your coquetry and grace to me every day? You replied: but you too reveal to me the love you feel.

कहा कि अर्ज़ करें हम पे जो गुज़रता है
कहा ख़बर ही हमें क्यों ज़बान हिलाते हो
I said, let me lay before you all that I endure—
You said, I know it all already; why move your tongue at all?
I said let me lay before you all that I go through; you said I already know it all, so why bother to move your tongue and speak.

कहा कि रूठे हो क्यों हमसे क्या सबब इसका
कहा सबब है यही तुम जो दिल छुपाते हो
I asked: Why are you cross with me, what is the cause of this?
You said: The cause is just this—that you hide your heart from me.
I asked why you are upset with me and what the reason is; you replied that the very reason is this—that you hide your heart from me.

कहा कि हम नहीं आएँगे याँ तो उसने नज़ीर
कहा कि सोचो तो क्या आप से तुम आते हो
"We shall not come to this place," so he said, Nazeer—
"But think," said she, "will you, of your own will, appear?"
Nazeer said that he would not come to this place, to which she replied, think it over—do you come of your own accord?
