I died in love, so long as that beloved showed no grace to me;
A bane upon the soul is that heart which no bane of the soul would be.
I kept dying in love until my beloved showed me kindness; that heart is a bane upon the soul which never became a bane upon the soul.
2
At death's threshold, my friends kept reminding me of God—
a thousand thanks that, even then, He grew not suspicious of me.
At the moment of death my friends kept reminding me of God; a thousand thanks that even then He did not grow suspicious of me.
3
The rivals laughed when I was made to rise and leave your gathering—
How light of worth is he who did not weigh too heavy on your heart.
The rivals laughed when I was made to get up and leave your gathering; worthless is he who did not weigh heavily upon your temperament.
4
On the Day of Judgment, as blood-money we'll claim the slayer himself—
so in losing our very life, no loss at all was ours.
On the Day of Judgment we will take the murderer himself as blood-money; so in losing our life there was no loss to us at all.
5
They came to visit my sickbed, yet joy was my death's own breath—
for none could remedy the cruelty the heavens had decreed.
When they came to visit my sickbed, I was dying of joy, for none could cure the injustice the heavens had decreed.
6
Such is my wretched state that even to a stranger it is told; yet before you, this whole tale could never be unfolded.
My wretched condition is such that at times it gets told even to a stranger, yet before you this whole tale could never be expressed.
7
This silence is not born of some sweet relish in your cruelty—it is
that I proved no match for the long struggle of lament and cry.
This silence is not because I find any sweet pleasure in your cruelty; rather, it is because I could not withstand the prolonged struggle of lament and wailing.
8
Even at the hour of reckoning, on Judgment Day, this was the talk:
Where, oh where, was the story of our love not told?
Even at the time of reckoning on the Day of Judgment, the talk was only this: where was the tale of our love not spoken of?
9
Even bound layer upon layer in your favour's one condition,
never once was the enemy's love put to the test.
This one condition of your favour kept us bound layer upon layer, yet never once was the enemy's love put to the test.
10
On the hope of the promised vision at Judgment Day, O Momin,
You died in vain—for you never pined with longing for the idols.
O Momin, you died in vain upon the hope of the promised vision on Judgment Day, for you never longed and pined for the idols (beloveds).
