1
Had the heart's solace not emerged from the rival's embrace,
Then, O defeated heart, in a mere breath you would have slipped away.
Had the heart's comfort not come forth from the rival's embrace, then, O unsuccessful heart, you would have departed in a single breath.
2
I die of longing, yes, for her from this moment on—
yet from the messenger's tongue no word of hers will come.
I die of longing for her, yet no message of hers ever comes from the messenger's tongue.
3
Had you but thought of me on that night of union with my rival,
would the sun not have risen at dawn to shine till evening came?
If you had remembered me on that night of union with my rival, would the sun not have risen at dawn and shone till evening?
4
Then would you know the truth of it, O turning wheel of days,
if even your foe had come forth from that place, as I did, in my own way.
Then you would know the truth of it, O turning wheel of time, if even your enemy had emerged from that place in my own way, as I did.
5
At every gathering through the night each one would ask my name;
What joy it was whenever someone bearing my own name came forth.
At every nighttime gathering everyone would ask my name; it was a delight whenever someone who shared my name appeared.
6
Why should my pleading beg for desire's reward from them—
have you ever seen a task fulfilled by one who acts not?
Why should my pleading beg the reward of desire from them—for has anyone ever seen a task accomplished by someone who does nothing?
7
Mourning aloud was needful at my heart's funeral—
perhaps, alarmed, she'd step out to the edge of her balcony.
Loud mourning was necessary at my heart's funeral—perhaps she would have stepped out in alarm to the edge of her balcony.
8
Like a thorn it pricks within my heart, the morning breeze at dawn—
this is no thorn, but a rose-limbed beloved departing from my heart.
The morning breeze pricks within my heart like a thorn; this is no thorn, but a rose-limbed beloved leaving my heart.
9
Had the houris not been written in the believer's fate at all,
why would such a wretched end emerge from mere mockery alone?
Had the houris not been written in the believer's fate at all, why would such a wretched end emerge from mere mockery alone.
