In but a single glimpse of that fair face a hundred towns were made,
The robe of patience, torn to shreds—what ruin, say, shall thus be laid?
In a single glimpse of that fair face a hundred towns came into being; the robe of patience lies torn, and this, they say, shall be the cause of ruin.

If this fiery heat of theme keeps scattering sparks,
The binding of my verse-collection will be a candle's wick aflame.
If this fiery heat of my theme keeps scattering sparks like this, then the binding of my poetry-collection will become like a candle's burning wick.

How can the heart find solace in some hope of faithfulness,
When this alone is my worry—that she will repent of her promise?
How can the heart be consoled by any hope of faithfulness, when the only worry is that she will regret her promise?
4
If your dagger-like eyelashes do not slay me outright,
What use then is the Angel of Death, and for what shall he be sacrificed?
If your dagger-like eyelashes do not slay me outright, then what use is the Angel of Death and for what shall he be sacrificed.

Recite one ghazal too in your own style, O Momin—
surely in this gathering someone will know the worth of verse.
O Momin, recite one ghazal in your own distinctive style too; after all, in this gathering there will surely be someone who appreciates fine verse.
