You did not come to see us in times of illness,
You raised your head from the cradle a hundred times.
You did not come to see us in times of illness, / You raised your head from the cradle a hundred times. (Meaning: You did not visit us when we were sick, even though you made great efforts when you were young.)

The gardens of the flower-beds, what lack of grace they showed,
Not a single patch of bloom was brought to us, alas.
The gardens of the flower-beds, what lack of grace they showed, not a single patch of bloom was brought to us, alas.

Be careful, for his wrath, my friends, is a deadly curse;
Never forbid us, for we are destined to be celebrated.
Be cautious, friends, for his anger is a deadly curse; never forbid us, because we are meant to be celebrated.

Even if the lofty poem lacks grace,
It could not guess the splendor of the whole garden.
Even if the lofty poem lacks grace, it could not guess the splendor of the whole garden.

The map is strange, the artisan of that map,
Has not created a face like this, ever since time began.
The map is wondrous; its artisan has never created such a face since time immemorial.

The night was deep in intoxication with conversation of the heart,
The intoxicated one merely swayed, meaning greatly inclined.
The night was deeply engrossed in the conversation of the heart, but the intoxicated person merely swayed, meaning greatly inclined.

We saw the blossoming of her heart in her absence, and tested the fortune of her gaze a hundred times.
We saw the opening of her heart in her absence, and tested the fortune of her gaze a hundred times.

Oh lover, the antics you've performed are truly clumsy,
When did this foolish lover fall for your heart?
Oh lover! The antics you have performed are truly clumsy; when did this foolish lover fall for your heart?
