नाले में अपने हर शब आते हैं हम भी पिन्हाँ
ग़ाफ़िल तिरी गली में मिंदान है हमारा
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
In the stream, we bring all our breaths, we too, O Beloved; our arena lies in your street, oblivious and grand.
Explanation
This couplet is a masterful depiction of self-deprecating love. Mir Taqi Mir suggests that his life and struggles are as humble and transient as the drains (Nale) that people use nightly. Yet, despite his low status, he claims that the beloved's street (Gali) is his grand arena (Mindan). It's a powerful assertion: even from a position of weakness, the poet's presence and passion dominate the beloved's world.
