Ghazal
Duzdida Nigah Karna Phir Aankh Milana Bhi
This ghazal describes a complex and contradictory state of love, where the lover is expected to not only maintain a scornful gaze (duzdida nigah) but also make eye contact and pick up the returning curtain of affection. It explores the capriciousness, pretense, and emotional entanglement of love, suggesting that alongside simple display, emotional torment and performance behind the veil are also necessary.

1
To gaze with sorrowful eyes, and then to meet them,
To bring this departing lap closer, and lift it too.
To gaze with sorrowful eyes and then to meet them, and to bring this departing lap closer and lift it up.
2
To let the lover's wanderings remain acceptable,
One must also walk with care, lest stumbling be found.
If one wants the lover's wandering ways to remain acceptable, one must also walk with caution, lest stumbling be found.
3
Even if the burqa is lifted, with just half a face,
What is there to hide, or even to show a little sparkle?
Even if the burqa is lifted, with just half a face, what is there left to hide or what is there to show a little sparkle?
4
Look, my eyes are lowered, even a stone can strike,
Or torment openly, or reveal it behind the veil.
Look, my eyes are lowered; whether struck by a stone, or tormented openly, or shown behind the veil.
5
This company is such a blessing, O life,
Even the golden companionship must sometimes be hidden from the face.
This companionship is such a blessing, O life. Even the golden companionship must sometimes be hidden from the face.
