For many days, my heart's doorstep was the pretense of separation,
Sometimes it was pain, sometimes a stain, sometimes a wound, sometimes an attack.
For many days, my heart's doorstep was the pretense of separation; sometimes it was pain, sometimes a stain, sometimes a wound, and sometimes an attack.

The dawn's breath, the gathering of joy, was no less than the night of sorrow, O beloved, for you were the lamp, and I was the milk; you were the kite, and I was the dust.
O beloved, the breath of dawn and the gathering of joy was no less than the night of sorrow, for you were the lamp and I was the milk; you were the kite and I was the dust.

If the heart, which was worn out, turned to blood, then it was good, that wherever it was,
It was once stained by the burning of the chest, and once afflicted by pain and sorrow.
The Shayar says that if the heart, which was worn out, turned to blood, then it was good that wherever it was. At times it was stained by the burning of the chest, and at times by pain and sorrow.

From the heart in turmoil, the night of union passed away, lost in its own thought; neither was there a mind at rest, nor leisure, nor a gentle breeze, nor peace.
From the troubled heart, the night of union passed lost in its own thoughts; there was neither peace of mind, nor leisure, nor a gentle breeze, nor tranquility.

Even if the eyelid lifted from the gaze, it shed blood from our heart,
For that faultless arrow was situated beyond the heart of Kisu.
Even if the eyelid lifts from the gaze, it will shed blood from our heart, for that faultless arrow was situated beyond the heart of Kisu.

These friends of yours, whose moods are such, whose sorrow is so deep,
Those very calamities of the lover's heart, at times were also friends to us.
These friends of yours, whose moods and sorrows are so deep, are the very calamities of the lover's heart, who were at times also friends to us.

This pain, this weariness, was not the wound of a fresh heart;
When he had the passion of the hunt, his concern was only for the wound.
This pain and this weariness were not from the breaking of a fresh heart; when he had the passion for the hunt, his concern was only for the wound.

When the time comes to go that way, please tell that person that I am unfaithful, but 'Mir' was a broken heart in your fresh garden with thorns.
When the time comes for her to go that way, please tell her that I am unfaithful, but 'Mir' was a broken heart, among the thorns in your fresh garden.
