Ghazal
This ghazal contemplates the transcendent detachment of the lover's heart, which exists beyond both worlds. With poignant irony and skepticism, the poet dismisses the belief that his stone-hearted beloved will ever shed sincere tears over his death.

It is mistaken to believe my heart is either here or there; detached from both worlds, God alone knows where it may be.
It is wrong to think that my heart is either here or there; it is detached from both worlds, and only God knows where it might be.

Laughter grips me time and again, these are mere idle words to hear: That beside my lifeless corpse, O stone-heart, your eyes will shed a tear!
I laugh repeatedly because these are merely empty words to say—that you, O stone-hearted one, will weep over my dead body.

Offer my farewell to faith and disbelief, O Sheikh, and tell the Brahmin too: my prostration shall be wherever my beloved passes through.
O Sheikh, convey my farewell to both faith and disbelief, and tell the Brahmin as well; my prostration will be in whichever direction my beloved passes.

For this reason alone I tend it with my eyes so devotedly; this scar upon my heart shall at last become a shield against her arched brow.
I care for this scar on my heart with my very eyes only because, in the end, this heart's wound will become a shield against the bow of her eyebrows.

Even angels bear upon their brows the scar of pious servitude; could there truly be a mortal soul untouched by the devotion of love?
When even the angels bear the mark of servitude upon their foreheads, could there really be any human who is not devoted to love?
