Gharri gharri gharyal bajavey
Rain wisal di piya ghatawey
Merey man di baat jey pawey
Hathoon chasey gharyal ni
— Bulleh Shah
Meaning
House by house, the ghareyal plays its tune; the rain's gentle whisper, the lover's cloud. If it could hear the words of my heart, it would play the ghareyal with its hands.
Explanation
In this beautiful couplet, Bulleh Shah beautifully personifies the rain. He compares the sound of the falling raindrops to the call of the beloved. The Shayar suggests that just as the rain echoes the yearning of the heart, our deepest desires and unspoken words are constantly calling out for the one we love. It’s a profound meditation on how natural elements often mirror the intense emotions of the human spirit.
