वाक़िफ़ हैं हम कि हज़रत-ए-ग़म ऐसे शख़्स हैं

वाक़िफ़ हैं हम कि हज़रत-ए-ग़म ऐसे शख़्स हैं
और फिर हम उन के यार हैं हम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
Well aware are we that Lord Grief is such a formidable soul; and after all, we are his companion—we too are such a soul.
We are well aware of what kind of person grief is, and since we are his close friend, we too are just that kind of person.

दीवाने तेरे दश्त में रक्खेंगे जब क़दम
मजनूँ भी लेगा उन के क़दम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
When those driven mad by you set foot upon the desert sand, / Even Majnun will bow to kiss their feet—such masters walk the land.
When those driven mad by your love set foot in the desert, even Majnun will kiss their feet, such is their greatness.

जिन पे हों ऐसे ज़ुल्म ओ सितम हम नहीं वो लोग
हों रोज़ बल्कि लुत्फ़ ओ करम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
We are not the sort who endure such cruelty and tyranny; rather, we are those showered daily with grace and favor.
We are not the kind of people who endure such tyranny and oppression; rather, we are the ones who receive kindness and favors every single day.

यूँ तो बहुत हैं और भी ख़ूबान-ए-दिल-फ़रेब
पर जैसे पुर-फ़न आप हैं कम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
Though heart-alluring beauties abound in numbers true, yet rare is anyone endowed with such fine art as you.
Although there are many other heart-alluring beauties, people as skilled and artful as you are very rare.

क्या क्या जफ़ा-कशों पे हैं उन दिलबरों के ज़ुल्म
ऐसों के सहते ऐसे सितम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
What endless torments those heart-stealers inflict upon the long-suffering— / only such rare souls could endure such cruelties from ones like them!
What countless cruelties those beloveds inflict upon their long-suffering lovers; only such extraordinary people are capable of enduring such torments from ones like them.

दीं क्या है बल्कि दीजिए ईमान भी उन्हें
ज़ाहिद ये बुत ख़ुदा की क़सम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
What is mere creed? Surrender even your soul's faith unto them; O ascetic, by God I swear, these idols are such enchanting beings!
Religion is of little consequence, one should surrender even one's faith to them; O ascetic, I swear by God, these idols (beloveds) are truly such remarkable beings.

आज़ुर्दा हूँ अदू के जो कहने पे ऐ 'ज़फ़र'
ने ऐसे शख़्स वो हैं न हम ऐसे शख़्स हैं
Why be aggrieved by what the rival says, O Zafar? Neither are they that kind of person, nor such a one am I.
O Zafar, why should I be aggrieved by what the rival says? Neither is the beloved that kind of person, nor am I such a person.
