From every tongue of the comb, let one hear the boast of her tresses; tearing the breast wide open at night, this hair-splitting grace of her locks.
One should hear the comb boast through its every tooth about the beloved's tresses, for this hair-splitting lock tears the chest wide open at night.

Just as upon the Kaaba rests a mantle dark and deep, across the face of this beloved, the veiling tresses sweep.
Just as a black covering rests upon the Kaaba, in the exact same manner, the tresses of hair veil the face of this beloved.

Why are the beloved's locks so tangled and enraged with my heart? / What sin against the tress could this ill-fated wretch have wrought?
Why are the beloved's tresses so angry and entangled with my heart? What has this ill-fated heart done that goes so much against the tresses?
4
No concern have I with faith or heresy, no business with temple or shrine; my heart circumambulates only the beloved's cheek, and tresses divine.
I have no concern with disbelief or faith, nor any business with the temple or the mosque; my heart only circumambulates the beloved's cheeks and tresses.

Is it the musk-pod of China’s gazelle, or the sweet musk of Tartary rare? How can I merely say this tangled knot is just the navel of her fragrant hair?
Is it the musk-pod of the deer of China, or the musk of Tartary? How can I merely say that this knot of hair is just the navel of her tresses?
6
Today day and night are locked in hand-to-hand strife; / O sun-faced love, is the ribbon of your dark tresses not spun of gold?
Today, day and night are locked in a fight with each other; O radiant sun-faced beloved, is the ribbon tying your dark tresses not woven with golden thread?
7
Some liken her curling tresses to the letter 'Jeem', and some to 'Laam', / But I say, 'Zafar', that the sweep of her locks is the letter 'Kaaf'.
Some compare the beloved's locks to the letter 'Jeem' and some to 'Laam', but Zafar says that her spread-out hair resembles the letter 'Kaaf'.
