Ghazal
This ghazal explores the transcendent nature of love, where the lover willingly accepts the loss of peace and embraces sorrow as a faithful companion. By surrendering the ego, the veil separating the lover from the divine beloved dissolves, revealing a state of profound unity where nothing remains except the beloved.

In love, I bear no grief that peace and patience have flown away; Love's sorrow remained my steadfast companion—who cares if none else chose to stay!
I have no sorrow that love deprived me entirely of peace and patience; the grief of love remained my companion, so it matters not whether anyone else stayed.

Once I cast aside the veil of my own self, that divide between us was no more; no longer hidden stays the Veiled Beloved, for none remains now save the One.
When I erased my own ego (selfhood), the veil that stood between us vanished. Now that veiled Beloved is no longer hidden, because none remains except Him.
3
So long as I was blind to my own state, I weighed the faults and virtues of others; yet when my gaze turned upon my own flaws, none in my eyes remained wicked.
As long as I was unaware of my own condition, I kept observing the faults and virtues of others; but when my gaze fell upon my own flaws, no one appeared bad to me anymore.

On which day, dreaming of your face, did Judgment Day's turmoil not rise upon me? On which night, lost in thought of your dark tresses, did a host of calamities not hover over my head?
There was never a day when the thought of your face did not bring the turmoil of Doomsday upon me, nor a night when lost in the thought of your locks, a crowd of calamities did not hover over my head.
5
If the cupbearer now delays in serving the cup of wine, alas, what tragedy! For this era of delight and season of mirth shall not remain in the world forever, as it never did.
If the cupbearer delays in serving the cup of wine now, it would be a great misfortune, because this era of joy and celebration will not last forever in the world, just as it never has before.

After many days that sun-faced beauty shone resplendent before my eyes today; not a trace of patience or peace was left in me, nor did any veil of modesty remain with her.
Today, after many days, when that sun-faced beloved finally appeared before me, I lost all patience and composure, and they had no regard left for modesty and restraint.
7
When the gleaming blade of your sword became a fountain for the oppressed, countless caravans departed with parched tongues, yet none remained thirsting for eternal life.
When the flowing water of your dagger and sword became a public fountain for the oppressed, countless caravans departed with parched tongues, and none remained thirsty for the elixir of life.

If my beloved would answer me plain, weeping tears of blood I would ask in pain: Whose tearful eyes rubbed against your feet, that on your soles no henna stains remain?
If my beloved would give me an honest answer, weeping tears of blood I would ask whose tear-filled eyes rubbed against their feet, causing the henna's color to wash away from their soles.

I longed to hold them fast, unwilling to let go though life itself should part; I tried a hundred thousand wiles, ten million spells—yet they stayed not, stayed not, stayed not, stayed not.
I wanted to hold them back and not let them go, even if it cost me my life. I tried thousands of tricks and millions of spells, but they still did not stay.

Though thousands of cruelty’s arrows struck, leaving us writhing low in the dust, the two-edged blade of her coquettish charm struck so clean that not a sinew held us fast.
Though thousands of cruel arrows struck us and left us writhing in the dust, the double-edged sword of the beloved's coquettish charm struck so completely that not even a sinew remained attached.

Do not deem him human, O Zafar, no matter how wise or discerning he may be; who remembers not God in moments of pleasure, and fears not God in fits of fury.
O Zafar, do not consider someone a human, no matter how wise and intelligent they may be, if they forget God during times of pleasure and lose the fear of God in fits of anger.
