Ghazal

Bahadur Shah Zafar· Ghazal· 7 shers

This ghazal renounces both worldly royalty and superficial asceticism in favor of pure, heartfelt devotion to the Divine. The poet seeks only enough consciousness to remain perpetually enchanted by the Beloved, prioritizing an indelible spiritual truth inscribed on the heart over mere bookish knowledge.

Neither the dervish's patched cloak do I crave, nor the royal crown of a king; grant me just enough wits, O Beloved, that I may remain mad in love with you.
I neither desire the patched cloak of a dervish nor the royal crown of a king; just grant me enough awareness that I may remain madly in love with you.

What worth is held in books? So many have I written and washed away; yet etched like an inscription in stone upon my heart is your every word.
There is little worth in books, for much has been written and washed away, but your spoken words are etched permanently like an inscription on stone upon my heart.

Cherish each moment spent in ecstasy within this garden; keep pouring, O vow-breaking cupbearer, cup after brimming cup.
Consider every moment spent in bliss and intoxication in the garden as a blessing, and keep serving, O vow-breaking cupbearer, cup after brimming cup.

Nowhere did I behold that splendor which in the heart's chamber shone, / Though long I struck my brow in mosques, and searched each idol-shrine alone.
I did not see anywhere else the divine manifestation that I witnessed within my own heart, even though I knocked my head in mosques and searched extensively in idol temples.

Let something happen so that I might reach my cherished goal—be it the path of austere piety, or the libertine's wayward stroll.
May something happen that leads me to my ultimate destination, whether it is through the path of piety or the way of the carefree libertine.

All this coming and going rests upon the breath's ebb and flow; this transit lasts only till then—thereafter, no more to come, no more to go.
All this movement and living depends solely on the ebb and flow of breath; this coming and going lasts only as long as breathing continues, after which there is no coming and no going.

Far better than the callous ascetic's hollow, pious cries, O Zafar, is the ecstatic chant a reveler raises from an aching heart.
O Zafar, if a carefree drunkard raises an ecstatic cry from true heartache, it is far better than the callous ascetic's hollow chanting of 'Hu-Haq'.
