Neither sorrow endures forever nor delight; it is now like this, now like that / Flux reigns supreme at every fleeting moment here; it is now like this, now like that.
Neither sorrow nor joy lasts forever; circumstances keep changing. Here, change occurs at every moment, being like this at one time and like that at another.

Sometimes with torn collar, sometimes scattering dust in the air; Madness drags me wandering—now like this, and now like that.
Sometimes my collar is torn, and sometimes I am scattering dust in the air; my madness drags me wandering all about, sometimes in this condition and sometimes in that.

One moment they are my dearest friend, the next a bitter foe; our bond never rests in a single state, now it is this, now so.
Right now they are my close companion, and the next moment they become an enemy. Our companionship never remains in one steady state; sometimes it is like this, and sometimes like that.

If like the weeping wine-flask I cry, like the laughing cup I smile with glee; such is the passing state of this realm—now like this, now like that it comes to be.
If at one moment I weep like a wine-flask, at another I laugh like a goblet; such is the state of this world, constantly shifting from this way to that way.

At times tears stream unceasingly, at times rise sighs and weeping cries; in short, the plight of parting's grief shifts constantly—now like this, now otherwise.
At times tears flow and at times there are sighs and wailing; in short, the state of separation's sorrow is sometimes like this and sometimes like that.

The floral spring endures but a few brief days, then absolute autumn is due; The garden is an abode of cautionary truth—now it is like this, now like that.
The blossoming of flowers lasts only a few days, after which autumn is bound to arrive completely. The garden is a place of cautionary lesson, where conditions keep changing from this to that.

How could one ever stand steadfast, O Zafar, true to his word, whose shifting intent constantly wavers, turning now this way, now that?
O Zafar, how can someone ever remain steadfast on one word when they constantly change their intention, being this way at one moment and that way the next?
