Word Meaning
हमरा
hamrā
Meaning
companion, fellow traveler; poetic contraction of 'hamrāh'
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu and Persian poetry, 'hamrā' is a poetic contraction (takhfīf) of 'hamrāh', meaning a companion, guide, or fellow traveler. In this couplet, it refers to Khizr, traditionally venerated as the quintessential guide of wayfarers; the poet observes ironically that even such a supreme fellow traveler is dismissed as lost or misguided in the hazardous realm of love. It reflects the motif that conventional guidance fails entirely before passion.
Etymology
Persian; poetic contraction (takhfīf) of 'hamrāh' (ہمراہ), from 'ham' (together) + 'rāh' (path, way).
Usage
Used primarily in classical ghazals where poets drop the final aspirate 'h' of 'hamrāh' to accommodate poetic meter (wazn).
