Word Meaning

हूरें

hūreñ

hinoun (feminine plural)

Meaning

Celestial nymphs or maidens of paradise; beautiful virgins of heaven.

Detailed Meaning

In Islamic and Persianate tradition, a hoor is a radiant, pure celestial maiden inhabiting paradise. Urdu poets often invoke them either to satirize ascetic promises of heaven or to assert that the earthly beloved is far superior. In this couplet, the poet playfully contemplates paradise, hoping these very earthly beauties will reappear there as houris so that he may exact his revenge.

Etymology

From Arabic حُور (ḥūr), originally the plural of حَوْرَاء (ḥawrā', meaning women with contrasting deep black pupils and intense white sclera); pluralized in Urdu with the feminine suffix '-eñ'.

Usage

In the ghazal, houris are frequently juxtaposed with the worldly beloved, often dismissing paradisiacal rewards in favor of earthly beauty.

Examples

What lure do the houris of paradise hold for a heart chained to earthly love?

Even the celestial houris envy the grace of my beloved.
