Word Meaning
हैगी
haigī
Meaning
Is; exists (archaic feminine form of the present copula 'hai').
Detailed Meaning
An archaic or early Urdu (Rekhta) feminine form of the present copula 'hai', meaning 'is' or 'exists'. In this couplet, it agrees grammatically with the feminine noun 'sudh' (awareness/consciousness), denoting that no remembrance or consciousness remains. Such gender-inflected copular forms were common in eighteenth-century Delhi poetry before being phased out of standard Urdu.
Etymology
From Sanskrit roots through Prakrit/Apabhramsha into Old Hindi and Rekhta, formed by adding the feminine marker '-gī' to 'hai'.
Usage
Widely found in early classical ghazal (such as in Mir and Sauda) to agree with feminine subjects, though later discarded in standard Urdu.
Examples
There is neither hope nor any expectation left.
A strange restlessness exists in the heart.
