Word Meaning
साहब
sahib
Meaning
Sir, master, gentleman, or an honorific title of respect.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu literature, 'sahib' denotes a gentleman, master, or respectful honorific equivalent to 'Sir' or 'Mr.'. In this couplet, it is appended to the poet's takhallus (Mir Sahib) to contrast his respected social standing with the humiliating state of being treated like a mere slave before the beloved. This juxtaposition brings out bitter irony and helplessness in romantic devotion.
Etymology
From Arabic ṣāḥib (صَاحِب), originally meaning 'companion', 'associate', or 'possessor/master'.
Usage
Commonly suffixed to poets' pen names or names of nobility as an honorific, often placed in ironic contrast to servitude in ghazals.
Examples
