Word Meaning
सुल्तान
sultān
Meaning
A monarch, sovereign ruler, or emperor wielding authority.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'sultan' represents supreme temporal power, majesty, and earthly dominion. In this couplet by Iqbal, the ruined palace of the sultan is placed in direct contrast with the hermitage of the mystic (faqir), illustrating the decay of both worldly authority and spiritual contemplation. It functions as an emblem of political power whose grandeur is transient compared to divine governance.
Etymology
Arabic: from the root s-l-ṭ (س-ل-ط), originally denoting 'authority', 'dominion', or 'power', which later evolved into a regal title.
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, the sultan is regularly juxtaposed with the dervish or qalandar to emphasize the superiority of spiritual detachment over worldly sovereignty.
Examples
