From the Persian noun 'sharm' (شرم, meaning shame, modesty, or bashfulness) adapted into Hindustani with the verbalizer '-ānā'.

In the ghazal tradition, it evokes either the delicate modesty (haya) of the beloved or their hesitation arising from guilt after tormenting the lover.
