Word Meaning
लताफ़त
latāfat
Meaning
Delicacy, subtlety, purity, elegance, or immaterial fineness.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry and Sufi philosophy, 'latāfat' denotes extreme fineness, immaterial elegance, and purity of essence. In Ghalib's couplet, it represents pure, invisible grace which requires material opacity or density (kasāfat) to be rendered visible. Without the medium of physical matter or worldly contrast, absolute subtlety cannot manifest its splendor.
Etymology
Arabic, derived from the root l-ṭ-f (ل-ط-ف), relating to being gentle, subtle, fine, or delicate.
Usage
In classical ghazal, it is frequently paired in philosophical juxtaposition with 'kasāfat' (grossness or material density) to explore spirit versus matter.
Examples
A rare subtlety of thought graced each line.
Such exquisite delicacy cannot endure the crude touch of the world.
