Word Meaning
रिन्दाँ
rindāñ
Meaning
Libertines, drunkards, or spiritual non-conformists free from conventional religious hypocrisy.
Detailed Meaning
'Rindāñ' is the Persian plural of 'rind', denoting carefree drunkards or enlightened libertines who repudiate orthodox religious hypocrisy. In this couplet, it refers to the collective circle of wine-drinkers whose ecstatic pursuit spans all six directions of the cosmos. To the poet, what the ignorant observer mistakes for the ruin of the world is actually the boundless domain of these free spirits.
Etymology
Persian 'rind' (رند, libertine or free-thinker) combined with the Persian plural suffix '-ān' (ـاں).
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, the 'rind' is celebrated as a sincere seeker of truth whose intoxicated abandon is privileged over the dry, hypocritical piety of the 'zāhid' (ascetic).
Examples
The gathering of libertines in the tavern
The unrestrained ways of the carefree drinkers
