Derived from a Persian root meaning 'mingled' or 'poured out', Rekhta originally denoted poetry blending Persian diction with local Hindvi grammar, eventually becoming the earliest name for literary Urdu. In this couplet, it specifically refers to Mir's own Urdu verse which gained such renown that it traveled from Delhi down to the Deccan. Classical poets used it both for their compositions and the idiom itself.
