Word Meaning
यादश-ब-ख़ैर
yaadash-ba-khair
Meaning
May he/she/it be remembered fondly; bless their memory.
Detailed Meaning
A Persian invocation or parenthetical formula meaning 'may his/her memory be blessed' or 'spoken with fond remembrance'. In this couplet, it is used affectionately and nostalgically to recall the torn hem (daman) of the lover, whose threads clung to desert thorns like a spider's web. It adds a tone of wistful reverence toward past suffering in the desert of madness.
Etymology
Persian: 'yād' (memory) + '-ash' (his/its, 3rd person singular pronominal suffix) + 'ba' (with) + 'khair' (Arabic: goodness/blessing).
Usage
In classical Urdu ghazal, it is employed as a parenthetical formula of nostalgic blessing when recalling an absent beloved, a departed friend, or an era of past madness.
Examples
