Word Meaning
मदानी
madānī
Meaning
Ignorance, lack of understanding, or the state of knowing nothing.
Detailed Meaning
Derived from the Persian negative prefix 'ma-' (not) and the root 'dān' (to know) with the abstract noun suffix '-ī', it signifies ignorance or nescience. In classical poetry, it is almost exclusively found in the compound 'hech-madānī', denoting utter ignorance or a modest confession of having no real knowledge. In Mir's couplet, the beloved's mouth is traditionally imagined to be imperceptible and nonexistent; failing to comprehend it, the poet's claim to wisdom collapses into exposed foolishness.
Etymology
Persian: composed of 'ma-' (negative prefix, 'not') + 'dān' (root of 'dānistan', to know) + abstract suffix '-ī'.
Usage
In classical Urdu ghazal, it is nearly always deployed as part of the compound 'hech-madānī' to express intellectual humility or the failure of human intellect before transcendental beauty.
