Word Meaning
मजज़ूब
majzoob
Meaning
One entranced by divine attraction; a holy ecstatic or spiritually intoxicated mystic.
Detailed Meaning
In Sufi terminology, a majzoob is an ecstatic whose soul is drawn directly by God into a state of divine rapture, often causing him to appear eccentric or mad to worldly eyes. In this couplet, Iqbal refers to the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche as 'Majzoob-e-Farangi' (the Western ecstatic), recognizing his passionate spiritual intuition despite his philosophical detachment from divine revelation. Iqbal implies that such an intense seeker only lacked proper spiritual orientation to understand the true majesty of God.
Etymology
Arabic (مجذوب), passive participle from the root j-dh-b (جذب), literally meaning 'drawn' or 'pulled'.
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, majzoob describes an intoxicated lover or mystic who has bypassed formal ascetic stages due to overpowering divine love.
Examples
The ecstatic mystic remained lost in contemplation, unconcerned with the world.
Wisdom often conceals itself within the eccentric speech of a majzoob.
