Word Meaning
मगर
magar
Meaning
But, however; only if, unless, except.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Persian and Urdu, 'magar' functions as an adversative conjunction meaning 'but' or 'however', and often as a restrictive or conditional particle meaning 'only if' or 'except'. In this couplet, it introduces a keen conditional exception: if anyone wishes to write a letter to the beloved, let it strictly be written through the speaker. It frames the lover's readiness to serve as a humble scribe just to engage with anything concerning the beloved.
Etymology
Persian (مگر / magar, formed historically from ma- + agar).
Usage
In the ghazal, it is often employed to pivot a thought, pivot toward a condition, or introduce a poignant contrast.
Examples
