Word Meaning
मअज़ूर
ma'zoor
Meaning
Excused, exempt, justified, or possessing a valid excuse.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'ma'zoor' refers to someone who is excusable, exempt from blame, or physically helpless. In this couplet, it carries the sense of having a valid excuse or justification; the poet tells the beloved that their cold indifference and neglect cannot be justified or excused under any pretext. If kindness is withheld, the beloved must at least show active cruelty rather than pleading helplessness through disregard.
Etymology
Arabic (معذور / ma'dhūr), passive participle from the triconsonantal root ع-ذ-ر ('-dh-r), meaning to excuse, pardon, or exonerate.
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, the word is commonly used to reject the beloved's excuses for indifference or to depict the lover's genuine helplessness.
Examples
The broken heart is not excused from passion's trials.
Your neglect has no excuse that can be accepted.
