Word Meaning
मुबारकबाद
Mubārakbād
Meaning
Congratulations, felicitation, or good wishes offered on an occasion.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Urdu poetry, 'mubarakbad' denotes congratulations or the expression of joy at an auspicious event. In this verse, Ghalib employs the word with dark irony and sarcasm, congratulating himself on the arrival of a so-called sympathizer of his tormented soul who brings only pain and affliction. It frames agony and lethal gifts as if they were celebrated blessings.
Etymology
Compound of Arabic 'mubārak' (blessed, auspicious) and Persian 'bād' (optative form of 'būdan', meaning 'may it be').
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, poets often use this term ironically to welcome tragedy, grief, or impending death as though it were a festive boon.
Examples
Congratulations to the heart on the arrival of the spring of love.
Offer felicitations, for the torment of solitude has returned.
