Word Meaning
मानी
Mānī
Meaning
Mani, legendary ancient Persian master painter; also punningly alluding to meaning or essence.
Detailed Meaning
Historically, it refers to Mani, the third-century Persian prophet and founder of Manichaeism, celebrated in Persianate poetic tradition as the supreme archetypal painter and calligrapher. In this couplet, 'khāma-e-Mānī' denotes the masterly brush or pen of Mani required to depict and untangle the disheveled, script-like tresses of the beloved. Ghalib simultaneously creates a subtle wordplay (īhām) between the name Mani and 'ma'nī' (meaning or inner reality).
Etymology
Middle Persian / Syriac 'Mānī' (prophet and painter, c. 216–274 CE), borrowed into Classical Persian and Urdu.
Usage
In classical ghazal, Mani symbolizes supreme pictorial artifice and is frequently paired with Behzad or contrasted with the living beauty of the beloved.
