Word Meaning
बयाबाँ-नवर्द
bayaabaan-navard
Meaning
Wandering through the desert or wilderness; a desert-roamer.
Detailed Meaning
Literally refers to someone who traverses or wanders across desolate deserts and wildernesses. In the ghazal tradition, desert-wandering is the supreme trope of love-induced madness (junun), famously epitomized by Majnun. In this couplet, it signifies that although the lover was physically captive in prison, his wild thoughts could not be confined and continued to roam the open desert.
Etymology
Persian compound of 'bayābān' (desert, wilderness) and 'navard' (from the verb navardīdan, to travel or traverse).
Usage
Commonly used in classical ghazals to evoke the ecstatic desolation, alienation from society, and unrestrained mental flight of the passionate lover.
Examples
A desert-roamer pays no heed to the thorns along the way.
His longing mind remained a wanderer of the wilderness.
