Word Meaning
बद्दूर-चश्म
bad-dur-chashm
Meaning
Far be the evil eye; protected from an envious glance.
Detailed Meaning
The expression derives from the classical Persian apotropaic phrase 'chashm-e-bad dūr' (may the evil eye stay away). In this verse, Mir gazes at his weeping eyes flowing like a tempest, marveling at their astonishing sorrow and invoking protection so that the evil eye does not strike such a wondrous flood of tears. It functions poetically both as praise and protective exclamation.
Etymology
Persian: 'bad' (evil) + 'dūr' (far, distant) + 'chashm' (eye).
Usage
Widely employed as an exclamation in classical ghazals to protect either the beloved's beauty or the lover's extraordinary passion from malicious envy.
