Besitun (Behistun) is a historic mountain in western Iran famously featured in the Persian and Urdu romance of Shirin and Farhad. In the legend, Farhad is commanded to cut a channel through its solid rock with an adze to prove his love for Shirin. In Ghalib's verse, it is depicted not simply as a product of Farhad's labor, but as the heavy, oppressive dream of King Khusrau Parvez.
