Word Meaning
बे-शर्म
be-sharm
Meaning
Shameless, immodest, brazen, or devoid of shame.
Detailed Meaning
Literally meaning without shame or modesty, 'be-sharm' denotes one who acts boldly without fear of disgrace. In this couplet by Mir, it is used with poetic irony to describe the sinner who unabashedly lays open his skirt (daaman) before the overflowing rain-cloud of divine mercy (abr-e-karam), daring to absorb its boundless grace without hesitation. The shamelessness here reflects utter abandon in seeking forgiveness rather than moral depravity.
Etymology
Persian compound formed from the negative prefix 'be-' (without) and 'sharm' (modesty, shame).
Usage
In classical Urdu poetry, 'be-sharm' can denote moral brazenness or, paradoxically, the fearless and unpretentious surrender of the lover or sinner before grace.
Examples
He remains shameless in front of all reproach.
Such shameless boldness before divine grace.
