Word Meaning
बैठें
baiṭheñ
hiverb
Meaning
To sit, rest, or remain idle (subjunctive/plural form).
Detailed Meaning
In this couplet, 'बैठें' expresses the notion of remaining inactive, resigned, or at ease. Ghalib asserts that remaining idle in comfort goes against the restless spirit of a devoted lover. Even if entry to the beloved's threshold is denied, moving forward—even toward the Kaaba—is preferable to sitting in quiet defeat.
Etymology
Derived from Prakrit 'उवविट्ठ' (uvaviṭṭha), from Sanskrit root 'उपविशति' (upaviśati, to sit down).
Usage
In ghazal poetry, it often contrasts the dynamic anguish of love with passive rest or settled resignation.
Examples
Why sit idle when the journey awaits?
Lest we sit down in tired despair.
