In Persian and Urdu idiom, 'ba-jaan' (often followed by an izafat, as in 'ba-jaan-e...') functions as a solemn oath meaning 'by the life of'. In this couplet, the poet swears ironically by his own soul (Asad) to attest that the world causes very little torment, hinting that his capacity for suffering and grief is far greater.
