Word Meaning
पेश-दस्ती
pesh-dastī
Meaning
Taking the initiative, making the first move, or striking first boldly.
Detailed Meaning
Literally meaning 'advancing with the hand', pesh-dasti refers to taking the initiative, pre-empting, or making the first aggressive or bold gesture. In Ghalib's verse, it signifies initiating playful physical liberties or rough play with the beloved. The poet self-deprecatingly admits that the delicate beloved was not prone to violence, but rather it was he himself who audaciously provoked it.

In classical Urdu ghazal, it is frequently used to describe either pre-emptive aggression in rivalry or bold, forward behavior in romantic banter.
