Word Meaning
पिंदार
pindār
Meaning
Pride, arrogance, self-conceit, or an illusion of self-importance.
Detailed Meaning
In classical Persian and Urdu poetry, pindār denotes ego, self-conceit, or false pride in one's own existence. In this couplet, it is metaphorically presented as an idol-temple ('sanam-kada') of selfhood that must be leveled before the lover can willingly walk the path of reproach and humility. It symbolizes the chief spiritual and psychological impediment to absolute submission in love.
Etymology
Persian, derived from the verb pindāshtan (to suppose, think, or consider).
Usage
In the ghazal tradition, pindār is often contrasted with love and portrayed as an obstacle that must be shattered like fragile glass or demolished like a pagan idol.
Examples
shattering the glass of pride
demolishing the temple of self-conceit
