Word Meaning
नेज़े
neze
Meaning
Spear, lance, or javelin; also used as a traditional unit of height.
Detailed Meaning
Literally meaning a spear or lance, the word frequently appears in Urdu poetry within the eschatological motif of 'sawa neza' (one and a quarter spear lengths). In traditional Islamic belief, the sun on the Day of Judgment (Mahshar) descends to just a spear-length and a quarter above people's heads, radiating intense heat. In this couplet, the poet creatively uses this dread-inducing altitude to celebrate the towering stature and beauty of the beloved, whose turban wears the midday sun of Doomsday like a mere decorative blossom.
Etymology
Persian (نیزه / naiza), meaning a spear, lance, or javelin.
Usage
In ghazal poetry, it is widely utilized both in military-heroic metaphors and in theological allusions depicting the scorching proximity of the sun on Judgment Day.
Examples
The burning sun arrived a spear's length above the heads.
A wound struck by a lance through the lover's heart.
