The word denotes an entity or person of negligible value, triviality, or utter insignificance. In this couplet, it characterizes the perspective of intellect/reason which reduces everything other than the beloved to mere nothingness alongside non-existence ('nā-būd'). It is also widely used as a formula of poetic humility or self-deprecation in traditional verse.
